Kids BJJ in Elgin: Not Recess, Not a Lecture
If you live in Elgin, Manor, Bastrop, Taylor, or east Austin, and you have been shopping martial arts for your kid, you have probably seen two versions of "kids class." One is glorified recess with a belt at the end. The other is a lecture about character while kids stand in lines. Corsair BJJ is neither.
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at our gym on Roy Davis Road is a structured class. Coaches run a warm-up, teach technique, use games that sneak in timing and control, then put kids in safe live training at their level. Your child leaves with real skills and a room full of teammates, not a pep talk.
What BJJ actually is
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a grappling martial art. It focuses on fighting from any position and on submissions such as joint locks and chokes. It is a sister sport to Judo, and most of the work happens on the ground. That matters for parents. Kids BJJ is a non-striking class. They are learning how to move, hold position, escape, and tap out. They are not learning how to punch each other in the face.
"Jiu-Jitsu" is Japanese for "gentle art." Contact still happens. Every martial art carries the risk of a contact sport. We coach kids on how to fall and when and how to tap so a drill or a round ends. That is the safety system. It is not magic, and we do not pretend it is.
The payoff is the same list we put on the door: confidence, self-defense, and a body that can actually move. Coordination and focus show up because the class requires them. Respect shows up because the room requires it, not because we gave a speech about it.
What a class looks like
Age-appropriate training is the point. Kids work technique they can use on the mat and off it. Games are not filler. They hide timing, grip, and control inside something a kid will actually do. Live training at the end is scaled to their level. Nobody is throwing your kid into an adult roll.
The academy is a family gym. Adults train gi and no-gi later in the evening. Kids have their own hour. If your family also wants striking, Kids Kickboxing sits on the same weekly schedule, earlier in the afternoon. Same building. Same community. Different skill.
We are in Elgin on purpose. You should not have to drive into Austin for a serious kids class. The gym is at 127 Roy Davis Rd, Suite 2D, and the mats are about 1,000 square feet, cleaned daily. Two restrooms with showers are on site. It is a working academy, not a rec center with a mural.
When kids train
Always check the live schedule before you come. The board is the source of truth. On the 2026 schedule it currently looks like this:
- Kids Kickboxing: Monday and Wednesday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
- Kids BJJ: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Monday and Wednesday kids BJJ are listed as no-gi on the schedule. That just means rashguard and shorts instead of the kimono. Friday is listed as Kids BJJ. Either way, first class is simple.
What to wear the first time
Athletic shorts and a t-shirt. We have gi uniforms you can borrow so they can try the class without buying gear. Leave shoes off the mats. Leave jewelry off too. Trim nails. Wash the clothes after. Stay home if they are sick. Those rules live on our gym etiquette page because dirty mats and loose earrings make everyone miserable.
Show up ready to start on time. If you are going to be late on a regular basis, clear it with the coach. Pay attention during class. Be decent to the people on the other side of the handshake. That is the whole code.
How to start
We offer a free week pass so you can see how your child does before you commit. Claim it on the site, or use the contact form and pick Kids Classes. Then look at the schedule and get there a few minutes early so they are standing on the mat when class starts.
If you still have questions, read the FAQ first, then call or email. We would rather you walk in knowing what the hour looks like than guess from a Facebook ad.
