What to Expect at Your First Kickboxing Class in Elgin
Looking for your first kickboxing class in Elgin? Adults from Elgin, Bastrop, Manor, and east of Austin ask the same questions before they walk in: Do I need to be athletic already? Will everyone hit harder than me? Will I look lost when the coach calls a combo? Those questions are normal.
Corsair BJJ runs kickboxing (and Muay Thai) alongside Adult and Kids Gi and No Gi BJJ at 127 Roy Davis Rd Suite 2D in Elgin. Your first class focuses on stance, pads, and safe partners.
Before you walk in
Claim a free week pass on the site, then check the live schedule for a kickboxing session. Wear athletic shorts and a fitted t-shirt or rashguard. Bring water. Leave shoes and jewelry off the training floor. If you own hand wraps or boxing gloves, bring them. If you do not, ask the desk or a coach when you arrive.
Show up a few minutes early. Tell someone it is your first kickboxing class so they can steer you through the warm-up.
How a kickboxing class usually runs
Expect a warm-up, technique on the pads or bag, and controlled partner work that fits the room. Coaches teach kickboxing basics: stance, footwork, punches, kicks, defense, and simple pad combinations. You will repeat those combos until your hands and feet start to match the call. Feeling awkward at first is part of learning.
You will sweat. Your shoulders, calves, and hips may complain the next day. That is common in week one. Pace yourself. Ask for a water break when you need one. Day one is clean reps and safe pad work, not hard sparring.
If something hurts in a bad way, say so. If a combo is unclear, ask.
Who is coaching
Kickboxing at Corsair is led by Professor Micah Scarbrough, co-founder and head instructor. He is a 2nd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with more than 28 years in martial arts, including Muay Thai, San Shou (Sanda) kickboxing, and high school wrestling. He has served as a striking coach for kickboxing and MMA, coached competitive gymnastics for 12 years, and works as a strength and conditioning coach. Classes lean on movement, structure, and durability.
Tell him you are brand new to kickboxing. He would rather point you at a sensible starting point than watch you guess.
You do not need BJJ first
Kickboxing stands on its own. You do not need a grappling background to start. Many adults begin with kickboxing for fitness and self-defense, then try Gi or No Gi later. Others add pads after a few months on the mats. Either path works under one roof.
If you already train BJJ at Corsair, kickboxing can sharpen distance, timing, and footwork. You do not have to cross-train on week one. Add it when your schedule and recovery allow.
Fitness is not a gate
You do not need to be in fight shape before you start. Training is how you get in shape for training. Cardio will feel rough early. Consistency beats a perfect starting point.
Corsair’s aim still holds: Live Healthy, Build Confidence & Learn Self-Defense. That applies whether you put on a gi or wrap your hands for kickboxing.
After class
Drink water. Note one combo that clicked and one thing that confused you. Come back while the free week is open so you can decide with real information instead of nerves alone.
You do not need a long drive into Austin for serious kickboxing coaching. You need clear instruction, a room that welcomes beginners, and a schedule you can keep in Elgin.
